Haven't seen that issue of the "Prospector" yet, but a history of D&RGW #278 will be worth pursuing... The the 268 & 278 tenders (Cisterns) both seem to be shorter in height during the 1930's and prior to their taking turns on the Baldwin branch they both seem to have had their cisterns either modified or replaced... The 278 retained the non flared top, but visually just seems to be taller... The 268 retained a flared top design, but the additional height of the water legs gives the visual effect in some images (when well loaded with coal) to seem overall taller... By 1939/1940 they seem to be regulars on the Baldwin branch with a water tank stop at Castleton... The Link will take you to an image of #268 working the Baldwin branch on 6/4/1942... Cordially...
