I can't comment on the second question but I know that the silver paint on the caboose never changed under the D&RGW. I know when the C&TS was started they used white paint--the D&S to this day I think still uses silver on its cabeese.
I think that in a B&W photo the silver comes across as white. Any one else want to take it from here.
