From the east you could easily get to Navajo, and from the west to just east of Juanita. Then you needed to take the long detour to the north, or do something like Herb did. How far north you detoured kind of depended on how good your maps were, how well you knew the country, whether you had a 4x4, or how willing you were to risk getting lost. Going east from Gato was a lot easier than finding it going west. Going east you could just keep going until your found a paved road, turn right, and you would be in Chama. Going west you really had to know what dirt road to turn onto (there were no signs) or keep going past Pagosa Springs and take the state route gravel road to Arboles. But it was a long way around. Westbound if you chased west to Dulce you would be lucky to catch the train again around Oxford, and usually it would be dark by the time you caught up with it. Eastbound they they always beat me into Chama.
