The cylinders bolt to a manifold, which is bolted to the boiler. As Will says, the bottom end bolts to the bottom of the mud ring. Older Shays did not have the cast bottom bracket "crank case" and the individual cylinder/crosshead assemblies bolted to the mud ring.
