DURANGO — Seven people
were injured Saturday when a
parlor car ran off the tracks on
the Durango Silverton Narrow
Gauge Railroad and overturned.
Mercy Medical Center super-
visor Deanna Rappe said seven
passengers were taken to the
Durango hospital.
“They mostly had bumps and
bruises,” Rappe said. The most
seriously injured was a 68-year-
old woman who suffered a bro-
ken neck. She is in serious but
stable condition, Rappe said.
A female railroad employee,
working inside the derailed car,
suffered a broken shoulder, arm
and a large scalp laceration.
Amos Cordova, vice president
of the railway, said the parlor
car on train No. 462 derailed at
the Home Ranch siding six miles
north of Durango.
Track patrol officer Ralph
Martinez, who was following the
train in a rail patrol car, said the
last car tipped because of a pre-
mature switch in the tracks.
“The rear brakeman lined the
switch before the rear trucks
(wheel assembly) passed the
switch point,” he said.
However, other railroad offic-
ials said the accident may have
been caused by a wheel catching
in a switchpoint.
Cordova said ail trains would
run on schedule today.
The accident occurred as the
popular Durango-Silverton rail-
road was celebrating its 110th
anniversary.
