Don't be ridiculous, Fritz -

Dark Green is obviously a superior color, but per the CT article, the green jacket was applied specifically for the 1957 charter.  While I doubt that the VBR was in a hurry to change the color back to black, they would have had no reason to continue with the more costly green, and plans for a subsequent charter a year or two later fell through.
