The whole spot plate casting is rather complicated - at least a lot more than it looks from the front. Behind the visible plate is another smaller plate. This is where the bolts coming through the smokebox door attach. It is all one casting. Typical over engineered bit of railroad trivia....

It seems to me we looked at the plates for the 461 and 455 and found there were quite different on the back side. 463's plate was created off the original D&RGW drawing. It seems to me there ought to be a pattern somewhere. Senor Bush ought to know about this. He had them made...
