Surprise wifi connections

Computers have a mind of their own when it comes to selecting a wifi connection. Sometimes there are weak unpassword protected systems that your modem is detecting and falling in love with. Over and over again. You need to beat the damn computer into submission. But preferably do not use a hammer, as tempting as that might be. For what is it worth NGDF usually responds fast for me, but very occasionally (usually on the first Thursday following a full moon) it hangs up. The hamster may not be dead but he does occasionally seem to sleep.
