As a side comment, quartering is much more important in a steam locomotive where there are four power pulses per rotation. I have a 1.5" scale 4.75" gauge model of SV101/D&RGW 50. With a constant thrust throughout the rotation of the wheel, I learned that an exact quarter is no needed so long as the two axles are exact.
I threw a bronze side rod on my #101 (no D&RGW tender step castings) and it hit a tie. It bent at an atrocious angle. I machines two steel rods and found out the previous owner had not keyed the counterweights. One axle had an offset chain gear to the electric motor. The other axle would not line up correctly when I put it in until I turned it around. Both side rods then worked correctly.
One heck of a model. Fun to run.

Correction: I made an error, flipping the drive axle will change the axle from left hand lead to right hand lead or visa-versa. How I caught the error in quartering I do not clearly recall anymore. However it was not exactly 90 degrees.
