I last saw Carl Jack in 2001 when a bunch of us from the C&TS went up to Alamosa and had dinner at the True Grit Steak House with Carl, Jim Pearce, and Eldon Morgan. It was 2 hours of pure magic as these gentlemen shared their stories with us. What was amazing is that all three were just as interested in how the new generation of railroaders kept the wheels turning on such old equipment. Carl told me he was on the very last Rio Grande train in 1968 and still had the shovel from that run. He asked me if I would like to have it. I declined and told him it belonged in a museum than a private collection. He will be missed!
