IIRC, the parties were started here by immigrants who missed their homeland and now their descendants have taken the custom along when they go home for a visit. Just like here - and a lot like Christmas - it's become a big money maker for the beer & whiskey merchants. Our local pub rents port-a-potties for the day to accommodate the line outside on the sidewalk, and our local bagpipe band makes nearly all of their annual budget on just one day a year – and they're a Scottish band, not an Irish one.
