Got another note from Jerry Day with a nice photo of 04147 in Gunnison (no date or photographer ID), red with the button herald. A quick perusal of NGP X reveals water car 0459 also with button herald, white on black tank from 1940, next page '54 light colored tank (gray?) with no herald. Several other photos of 04017 in NGP X as well painted red with the button (as late as 1950), but no others work cars (in the book anyway) grey or red with the button, lots of gray with flying Rio Grandes and lots without.
In addition, "D&RGW NG Work/Box Outfit Car" book by Steve Swanson and Mike Horner states 04147, listed as a tool car, "was painted red and was the only work/box outfit car to retain the company'button' herald and standard boxcar reporting marks throughout it's life." From which one may assume that probably some red work/outfit cars had the button herald at some time during their service.

The original post may have only been a question regarding OA thru OZ, and not the work/outfit cars, but one thing leads to another...
