I can remember there was a desire to have more Antonito storage tracks at least 20 years ago. While the An tonito Terminal works fine when only the daily train is present, any time there is something more things get tight and a lot of excess effort is required to work. Cars of track equipment and ballast are often staged and a lot of times they'll get put on the lead to the CSF and CRF. With the Friends using the Antonito facility more, every time there is a work session, the RR crew needs to spend time rearranging stuff to get the right cars in the work locations requested.
When Leo was Executive Director, he mentioned to me that they wanted to build a storage track "on the other side of the highway". The Friends haven't helped much since that time, bringing numerous additional cars to the railroad and restoring them. When we built the Car Storage Facility, we wanted to have it reserved for the most vulnerable cars, but if you look in there at any time, you'll see cars that the railroad had no other place to put them.
