Thank you, Chris for correcting the record on Southern valve gear. Not even the great Fred Jukes got it right, since his otherwise masterful study "101 Valve Motions" (Part 2 in the series -- R&LHS Bulletin 89, p. 84 -- 1953) gives sole credit to William S. Brown of the Southern Railway and makes no mention at all of G. A. Pearson or New Zealand Railways, though Jukes does suggest that Brown may have been influenced by George S. Strong of Philadelphia, whose designs in turn were probably adapted from Timothy Hackworth.
