I knew a guy who worked on industrial stationary steam engines who swore that almost every steam locomotive he'd ever heard was out of time to a small degree. He claimed it was obvious to his ears as he'd worked on non-RR versions for decades. The only two he said sounded perfectly timed to his ears were the 611 and 4449.
I've read that when SRR 4501 was bought and in her early experiences with TVRM, she was badly out of time, but I have never heard any recordings of her exhaust to hear it for myself.
