Hi,
My first visit to the area (1972) allowed me my one and only ride on the D&RGW.
It was a great sunny day but by the time we got to Rockwood, it was raining. All the way up and back. 478 took me up and back. Just past Ah Wilderness, we hit a grade with the 9 car train and the wet rails did not allow 478 to take the train up. We doubled the hill and got into Silverton with (I think) 476 waiting with her train and ready to depart the wye as soon as we cleared the line.
Dad and I found a Texas BBQ joint up the street and had a delicious lunch.
For a view of Durango in 1972, look under Durango, 478, and 476 (or 473).
Many thanks to the section men riding the speeders keeping the track clear of rocks and putting out fires.

Instant gratification takes too long.
I was street smart, but unfortunately the street was Rodeo Drive.
