Re: 1911 wreck on the SVRy

I once pulled a similar stunt on the restored SVRy at the McEwen yard. We had spotted a flat car on the West leg of the wye, and went back out on the main line to do some switching. Returning, we had to back around the blind curve of the wye, but I did have a fireman and brakeman in the cab. They were chewing the fat when I suddenly thought wait, where's that flat. I hit the air about a second before we hit the car with a resounding bang. Fortunately nothing was hurt but my ego, and the butts of the crew where I chewed on them for not watching.
