Herb,
Please don't lump me in with the politically correct. Yes, i'm also aware of "how things used to be", I was there, taught mostly by Korean war guys. I still maintain riding the front footboard and especially catching it in motion, while picturesque, was dangerous. You're in the blind of the tender for both fireman and hogger, especially if you do it from mid-track, as i've seen done. The enginemen won't know they took your legs off until your body passes the middle of the tender, and then, maybe. When my great grandpa hired out on the B&M in1899, 300 plus men a month were being killed on the US railroads. I'll bet not a few were because of this practice.
