Was that 'add on' to the nearest building an old box car or just looks like one?

Question - If the passing loop was on the other side of the bridge, how would they have handled any crosses that may have occurred, would the station agent have to walk out to set the switches or did train crews do that themselves, and how would the train crew coming from Durango know that may have to wait and cross an opposing train, did they just rely on timetables?
