Hi,

As I understand it, the D&RGW Chama Wye tail extended to the other side of an access road. The C&TS shortened the tail track. Maybe to reduce the grade crossings on the line by one.

This is the same wye that was recently (past 3-4 years maybe) lengthened under John Bush so that an entire train can be turned.

When I visited in 1992, someone somehow had just recently (a week or two? before) pushed 0503 through the pile of dirt before the road. The caboose (maybe connected to a loco) went down the slight incline and on across the road (IIRC) blocking part of the road.

It was not derailed on the track but pushed off the end of the track.

IIRC, The repairs to the 0503 included steel plate along the sills to strengthen it. It might have been the first time the steel wood sandwich was done and many other C&TS cars have the same sort of mod - I think 0579 also has the mod.

Here are photos of the wye tail track with the flange groves in the macadam clearly showing.
