Re: Better than some of us expected - 1969 View

Further to the conversation, we like John and Russ were out there for some 3 days of freight action in June. My father and I went back in 1969 as I went with him on a business trip. We dropped down from Denver to Alamosa before going on to Durango. Alamosa looked bleak with all the dead engines and nothing happening. We thought the end was near for these engines along with everything else. We did manage to photograph the Durango-Silverton, and may have ridden to the AH! Wilderness Ranch for an overnight. I don't remember. I graduated High School that year and thought seriously about attending either Adams State College in Alamosa, or Ft. Lewis in Durango. Since there was nothing happening in Alamosa I was more serious about Durango. Back in those days you could not have a car on campus so that was then end of that!!! The point is 1969 was a bleak year for that trip. I am sure I took some images at Alamosa. I doubt we went to Chama. I do remember we drove over Marshall Pass that year which was cool. So yes, we should all be thankful that the C&TS is running those K-36's and everything else, and that the Silverton branch continues on as well. I remember getting Bob Richardsons "Narrow Gauge News" periodically and that was about all we had to tell us what was happening. Went back twice in 1971 to experience the revival !!! Someday I will get those images and scan them.
