Hi Greg,
Other than UV filters to protect the front elements of my lenses from swinging tripods, I rarely ever put a filter on my camera. I might use a Circular Polarizer or Grad-ND once in a blue moon, but ordinarily, I don't use filters. Neither do I deliberately super-saturate any colors in the photos. My goal is to make the scenes look like my eyes saw them.....not like a camera saw them, with deep shadows etc. And yes, I am working exclusively with raw.
One of the problems with Nikon raw is that Adobe Products such as Lightroom do not speak fluent Nikon. Nikon does not share the details of their Picture Controls with Adobe, so when you open the raw files in Lightroom, you get Adobe's best guess at what they should look like. Typically, I find that they look underexposed and muddy. I apply a lot of adjustments to get them looking like they do. I don't intend for them to look abused in any way and would consider any and all suggestions as to how to make them look even better. Unfortunately, there is no instruction book for this. Lightroom comes with no manuals, and all of the books and videos that exist on the subject are nothing more than general guides. You basically get better at this by experimenting and practicing. I'm not there yet, but I am working at it.
