The Montana Southern was equipped with former F&CC equipment at the time it was built, about 1914. The railroad operated briefly, then the mines it was built to serve shut down. Sporadic resumptions of mining resulted in equally intermittent operation of the railroad, with final abandonment in the 1930s. Most of the cars were derelict from that time on, and some were rescued for the museum at Virginia City Montana; Robert Richardson obtain box car 588, and moved it to Golden. The dump car was one of a group of side dump cars built for ore service on the F&CC, five of which went to the Montana Southern. John Maxwell used to sell drawings for these cars. Model Railroader had scale drawing of a very similar standard gauge side dump car some years ago.
