D&RG was by no means the onlly western railroad to use the Le Chatelier water brake. Check some old engineer's brake instruction books and you will find it referenced in its period of greatest use. AT&SF was the closest example.
The water brake had its risks as well as values. As trains got heavier and faster, there were other issues such as keeping up speeds on those long western downgrades.
