Yes, early standard gauge cars were small. I found a car body in Dodge City, Kansas, that looked narrow gauge: about 28 or 30 feet by about 8 feet. Wondering how a narrow gauge box car got to Dodge City, I checked it out. It turned out that the Sante Fe about 1,000 such cars in its early days. I believe I saw more of those cars in western Kansas or eastern Colorado once I knew what I was looking at. So, appearences are not always reliable.
