I was talking to John Engs (leader of the OB crew) and he said that was the first time they didn't hit a rock. (I guess they call it the Rocky Mountains for good reason.) John said they drop the 2,500# hammer about 12" to 18" to prevent splintering the pile, and even with that short of a drop they were averaging about 4" per blow. Pretty neat.
