Re: Caboose 0584

Here is the unofficial story as told to me by someone whom doesn't want his name used. Canon City had the caboose & 499 insured for loss. When 0584 burned down, several things happened. The first thing that happened was that one of the narrow gauge railroads offered to rebuild 0584 using the iron/steel parts that remained for free. Then the insurance company gets involved. Canon City was in dire need of funds to rebuild the Gorge property. The insurance company says you have 0584 insured for X amount of dollars. You will lose that amount of money if you have 0584 rebuilt. The insurance company wanting to get back some of their loss says if Canon City wants the money we want what is left of 0584 to sale for scrap. Canon City took the money. The insurance sold what was left of 0584 to a scrap dealer (name unknown) who had it sold to the steel mill in Pueblo for scrap. Scrap got melted down. As I say this is unofficial. Also there were numerous offers for the parts from rail fans. To avoid problems/save time 0584 went for scrap. Sad. I suppose this will open up a can of worms.
