Stephen,
The way I understand it is, the internet has taken quite a toll on them (like many brick and mortar businesses) and maintaining their "storefront". Instead of having a huge building with tons of inventory, I believe that they will be downsizing out of the large structure they are in currently. I was there a few weeks ago and it was eerily empty for quite awhile. There were many folks who poured in the whole time I was there but not busy like the "old days" that's for sure.
I remember going there when I was a kid, before they demolished the old Montgomery Ward building across the street to the west. At that time it was only the north "half" of its current configuration. I remember being blown away when they added the south "half". It was surreal to a young choochoo enthusiast. The biggest and the best in my neck of the woods. Man alive, it was like dying and going to heaven for me every time I could talk my Grandfather into taking me down there!
I don't know what their plans are, but truly hope they stick it out for a long long time. They are truly an icon; a tall and robust pillar in the modeling and everything trains world.
