This is part of very early draft gear. This is one of two assemblies bolted to the inside of the paired center sills of a wooden car; they capture two plates between which rests a coil spring. Through the spring and holes drilled in the plates runs a shaft which is the back end of a coupler. Most often this construction is used with link and pin couplers but it was also used with knuckle couples before the stirrup ends became common.
