I have followed faint traces of cinders for over 1/4 mile to find extensions of logging grades in the Rockies. Beyond the cinders there were no other artifacts until I came to a cut and just beyond it a spike. With a wood burning railroad you might not find much at all as every spike left that was usable was money wasted. Sometimes it can be very tricky as on one grade the only clue the grade had ended was the slope increased precipitously into a caterpillar road....
