Indeed in the past the 4501 would have a couple of guys in the cab, but they would normally rotate the guy with the scoop, not have two shoveling at once. They did in fact have a "Coal Cutter" in the tender. His job was to shovel coal from the back of the tender(mainly pushing it---Sometimes called a "Coal pusher", to the front or bottom front of the tender so it could shoveled by the fireman. In 1991 I rode the cab of 4501 on a one-way trip, and for a start-up scene I rode the tender seat(flung across and above the coal bunker). I ate lots of coal cinders from zero to 40mph, and it was starting to hurt pretty good around 30 mph, but made a cool video.
The 4501 now has a stoker engine, and has been outfitted with a feed-water heater. I have a variety video here, and I think its the last shot where you can see the steam exhaust from the feed-water heater on the engineers side near the cylinder. It was odd seeing this just on the one side if you were viewing it coming at you. This trip was one of the last 4501 ran on NS Mainline trackage, without a diesel. I made this little video some months ago, and it contains some NG also.
