EBT 16 and 18 *LINK* *PIC*

"... just what went wrong with engine #18"
It is my understanding that she has a cracked
valve piston. Presumably that is the failure
that occured in 1956. There are rumors of a
broken rod, but an inspection of #18 reveals
all the rods are in place.
"I'm also curious about #16, which was in the shop when the railroad closed. How close (or how distant) was it from running when the work came to a stop?"
As I have heard it, 16 had been recently
overhauled but work was not in progress at the
time of the shutdown. The overhaul could not
have been comprehensive becuase the tires on
#16 are deeply worn. Could have been Boiler
work instead.
Both locomotives are pretty complete by
retired steamer standards. What is missing is
around the shops somewhere.
