eastern narrow gauge question

For all the years I've hung around the East Broad Top, I have never been able to find out just what went wrong with engine #18 a short time before the railroad closed in 1956. I am told it failed on the road, but no one has been able to enlighten me about just what that failure entailed.
I'm also curious about #16, which was in the shop when the railroad closed. How close (or how distant) was it from running when the work came to a stop?
