I used to have the same problem, so when I visited the C&TS in 2014 I rode on the rear platform of the parlor car almost the whole day and took a picture of every milepost as we went by. So now I have a picture of every milepost (minus 3 or 4 I missed because I got distracted), and when someone here makes a reference to MP 297 (for example) I just find my photo and I know exactly where they mean.
(I wish I could spend more time playing with trains in Maine and Colorado, but living in New York where narrow gauge steam is nonexistent except as a historical reference, I have to make do with photos.)
