It was just a little on the miserable side today, hovering between 37 and 43 most of the day. We were pouring concrete up at Gladstone in the morning on an EPA project but the sun would briefly shine through and then it would snow. The 315 came into Silverton by truck over Coal Bank and Molas, and I would agree that the 493 moving over that road would not be a real smart move. And yes, the 493 served as a parts cow during its stay in Silverton. You may note a pile of coal on the ground in one of my pictures from today and that is real, honest to God D&RGW coal left in the tender all these years since the last operational run of the 493 between Alamosa and Durango. It arrived in Durango by truck in 1981, so for 35 years of D&S ownership, the engine has received virtually no care. For a long time there was no cap on the stack, and leaving the coal in the tender to work with snow and rain is not the sign of caring ownership. Asbestos removal several years ago is one thing positive, and the subsequent repainting and lettering was done as I understood it with volunteer time. The tender lettering is actually painted, with no vinyl in sight, and was a nice job.
