Though I don't know I'm thinking they would be independent from the high pressure cylinders to the low pressure ones. It seems the low pressure side would remain open for a period of time longer than the high pressure side. The already expanded steam would have to pass thru another set of pipes that would never be quite as hot as the high pressure side especially if the engine is super heated. Something else to be taken into consideration is the simpling valve which allows high pressure steam into the low pressure side when starting a heavy train.
Hopefully there is a Y6b Mallet expert who could tell us for sure. I lie awake at night thinking locomotives and I also would like to know!
