Actually I disagree with your sentiment, maybe for that operation you had going there, some guys don't like change, can't handle it.
Back in '71 NZR took delivery of the first batch and a follow up order in '74 of 49 DX . These 2750 hp brutes had their teething problems just like the GMD G12's did in the mid-50's. Once the bugs were sorted the DX was a strong performer, I never saw a Ground relay tripped on a DX, only had one go bad on me with a shot turbo clutch but I still got up the Paekakariki bank travelling slower than the uphill breeze pushing the clouds of smoke ahead of it. They had a great Dynamic on it as well and could stand a four foot flame out the stack.

Nice to see Earl relating the fun times too. I saw a video recently on youtube showing an elderly EMD E-unit being handled by a steam man. He seemed to know his electrics.
