We used to get what they now call "Shallow Bladed Scoops" - formerly Eastern Coal Scoops - in Chama. In fact we did order them from McMaster at one time. They've changed thier sizing. We used to order them by size number. The best size I recall were "Number 4". 2's were a bit wimpy but would work. 6's were a bit too much to swing and get in the door. - but you sure could sling the coal in 'em with one of those. When I was younger I could swing a #6, but no more.
To initiate a new fireboy we'd hang a #10 snow shovel on the hook for the new guy to try to manhandle. A #10 would JUST barely fit in the door with about 1/16" on each side. Each scoop of coal from a #10 wieghted about 50lbs. After one swing and the resulting crash of coal flying off the door and backhead. We'd give him the "begineer's shovel" a nice #2.
