I believe the ringers are more like the one on the far left. they are a single action horizontal piston air ringer. If you orient them the right way to make the clapper strike straight ahead or back, the clapper can still be hand rung, but not real well. They certainly do not work as well as a bell with a free swinging clapper inside.
