That information clarifies it. So it is an early internal combustion locomotive with a mechanical transmission. That other reference to a gas-electric locomotive must have referred to another locomotive built by I.C.L. It is interesting that they used gear sets that were constantly meshed, and then selected which set to power by the use of clutches.
Apparently, this internal combustion engine powered unit was actually just a locomotive, and not an inspection locomotive or a powered car that carried passengers, mail, or freight. I wonder how it fits into the general development timeline of internal combustion locomotives, and why they preferred a mechanical transmission over an electric drive system.
