The preservation reports were authored by myself, Kyle Wyatt, with Peter Hanson (editor for Railroad History) editing, and Mike Collins drawing the cars. It was a near three year project to write.
We found the footprint for the boxes on the carbodies. We didn't identify what they were used for, but either tools or batteries were options. There was more than one box over the years.
We spent almost 4 weeks in Chama and mostly Antonito with trips to Durango, Colorado Springs, and Denver (aka Golden) over three trips, two in the snow, while examining and documenting the 4 cars (we also looked at the Tourist car, as well as some bodies, and the collection at CSRM) and had a lot of support from C&TSRR, the Friends, and CRRM. We were able to use the Friend's shop for the second two sessions... that made it possible.
Kyle and I were able to better document and understand the J&S cars... there may eventually be an article... Hint: they were not built as "duckbill" cars...
The project to create a "Historic Train" is wonderful, but will take time, and a significant amount of money. I am glad to see it moving forward.
I am now working on a very different project. I am the new Director of the Nevada State Railroad Museum at Boulder City Nevada... So I have traded NG passenger cars for a EMD GP30 and steel Harriman cars, but we had a bit of N.G.
