Earl:
Just went back and looked at John Kellys picture of 492 and the pictures from the other guys of the 1026 and 1003 and it appears that the Rio Grand did substancial work on the tenders beyond the changing of wheels and axles. The coal capacity was obviously reduced as the boards and part of teh top of the coal sides were removed and it looks to me like they must have changed the bolsters as they appear to rest lower on the trucks as well as being lower due to the smaller wheels. Look where the bottom of the frame rests on the standard gauge, maybe 4 to 6 inches above the top of the bolster where as on 492 it appears to be about even with the top of the truck bolster. Also the tank leg looks higher on the 492.
Interesting????????
