Great Photos, Rick -
Please provide some additional info on the Youngstown Steel Heritage Foundation.
Do you have any idea why the apparent rush to restore the locomotive by 2016?

IIRC, my maternal grandfather - James L. Roemer - was a foreman at Youngstown Sheet & Tube from the mid 1920's through the mid 1950's. I have in my possession an interesting artifact cast from steel - probably in the very early thirties - during the visit to Youngstown of a representative of the German steel industry whom grandpa (whom I assume spoke at least a little German) was assigned by YS&T to host
:
The above mask is about 1/2 life size, and weighs a few pounds. IIRC, the original design was a high school art project created by my mother,
which the German - who was later determined to be a spy - insisted be used to create a mold to test the casting of a new formula for steel.
(I have been told that I used to tease my younger brother with the mask, telling him that it was "grandpa's ghost"
... )
I also have a
Zippo cigarette lighter - apparently presented to grandpa by YS&T - made of what appears to be stainless steel and that still puts out a pretty good spark. It would probably work just fine if filled with lighter fluid
:
I would be willing to donate both of the above to the Youngstown Steel Foundation, if they have - or are in the process of creating - a museum.
