Since the lever which the engineer uses to control such things is named after my great-great-great-grandfather, it behooves me to point out that the back end of the radius rod DOES appear to be slightly above the center of the block, putting the engine in the "Company Notch" - but in reverse

IIRC, the tipple in Monero was used primarily to load (drop bottom?) gons with coal headed to Chama, Antonito and Alamosa. Locos took on coal there only if they had unexpectedly run short when delayed for various reasons — one of which was described by Earl, above. Had the stop been planned, the dead cat would probably have been well-buried in coal.
And I agree with the others who believe the shot was taken, as the song says,
