Alan had hoped we could reach the far side of the big loop on the mesa between the
middle and top levels of The Whiplash, but it became apparent that we weren't going
to make it in time, so he wisely stopped the train in an open area about a mile east of
the Big Horn wye.   The colors peaked as our train was backing for the run-by:

... and disappeared as the train came forward:

If we had stopped any sooner the sky would have been behind a lot of trees; any later and we would have missed the show entirely.   Thanks to Alan's knowledge of the line - and awareness of what it takes to get good photos - it was a fitting Grande Finalé and Curtain for a marvelous day!
