Thank You, Mr. Hogger!
That was the morning before the May 25, 2010 excursion with green-jacketed #489. Needless
to say, as one of the organizers of the event I was pretty worried when I woke up in Chama to a
sideways snowstorm! Fortunately the following morning was sunny, and the wind had eased off
to a light breeze.
Here's the same view roughly 35 years before - late September, 1975 - when nearly every deciduous tree in the Rocky Mountains turned gold the same week
:
If we're lucky, the approach to Osier will look like this two weeks from today
:
... and Sublette will provide some beautiful backgrounds for a Fall-Colors charter
:
... which is why I agree with the recommendation that John West made a few weeks ago - go to Big Horn or even beyond for the first photo run-by, since there won't be much in the way of fall colors at Ferguson's Trestle or Lava Tank - as this shot, taken the same weekend as the three above, clearly shows:
OTOH, Hangman's Trestle might be a good spot for a quick-&-dirty night photo shoot on the way home. It's reasonably open there, level enough to be fairly safe, and at night it won't matter so much if there are no yellow trees to frame the shot(s).

p.s. Last I talked to John Cole there were only five tickets (5, count 'em 5) still available on the Friend's M.O.W. Fall Colors Charter on October 3 - that's just two weeks from today ...
