Sam, I enjoy some distant shots, but remember unless you have a good mic the audio may suffer. At least with steam hopefully you can hear them working up the grade for a long while. One of the best such shots I ever saw at Whiplash was the stuff Steve Forney shot a few years ago with 315 hauling those stock cars. It was a steady climb the whole way through all three sections of the Whiplash. It was not a runby either. I think he said he used 2 cameras and combined the scenes showing tight and wide shots. I can see where it would be a tough thing to try to shoot as far as framing is concerned. I am not afraid to pan though!!!

PS Yesterday after viewing your clip I was putting together a "San Juan" segment for eventual use and one guy has shots from the train going through that same location. The old section house or something is still down there where the Big Horn Section house was. This was late 40's.
