The reminds me of sugar cane railroads in Louisiana except their crossings of the T&P were at grade and there were no safety devices at the crossings, not even signals. There was a "gentlemen's agreement" that T&P trains would make smoke starting a mile before the crossings to warn the sugar cane trains not to cross. It should be noted that none of the sugar cane trains had any brakes.

There were several instances over the years of T&P trains cuting sugar trains in two.
