Wow, then I wonder if a modest size steam generator in the shop wouldn't pay for itself rather quickly. It could be used to keep a standby locomotive hot or preheat a cold one without losing a day's boiler time.
I know they used to do that with the old boilers in the roundhouse in the past. But maybe there is some kind of modern steam generator/boiler that wouldn't be too expensive to run and maintain that could do the job. Back when I worked in the Durango roundhouse, I transferred steam from a hot locomotive to a cold one to preheat it several times. It was slow, but I had all night.
