The piece of wood is wedged in under the running board to hold the relief valve on top of the valve chest open. 478 appears to be suffering from a leaky throttle and the relief valve won't stay open because of the blow-by past the throttle valve. By not doing this, the relief valve would snap shut, pressure would build up in the cylinders and 478 would wander away.

Been there, done that.

The snow covering everything is a nice touch.
